Anything with marble looks a little more sophisticated and luxurious. Marble is still conquering the hearts of many and the trend is definitely not dying anytime soon. More and more marble products are coming out in the market such as marble patterned mugs, marble laptop skin, you name it, they have it. Marble is still a very popular choice in many households when it comes to floorings and countertops due to its unique pattern. It easily gives the house an uplift and wows your guests when they walk into your kitchen. But they do not come cheap and deciding on them means investment. Thus, it is important to take good care of them to ensure that they last for a very long time and of course because fixing serious damages will eat up another portion of your wallet.

Stains and Etches

Due to its porous nature, marble is not very good with water, especially under such hot and humid weather in Singapore. Under wet circumstance, the loose part of the marble may burst, forming stone pits which if not attended will affect its surrounding stones. Its porous nature also makes Marble very prone to stains. Having made from calcium carbonate, our princess is very sensitive to acid. Thus, it is best to avoid any contact of it at all costs so that etches which will dull the surface does not occur.

Cracks, Chips and Scratches

While marble is durable, they are still prone to cracks and chips because it is relatively soft having only a 3 on the Mohs scale. Some cracks are due to faulty installation while some are due to negligence. Under the sudden change of pressure and temperature, marble can crack, oh they will. While honed marbles are scratch resistant, polished marbles are not so.

Fast is Key

How do you avoid them though especially when in the kitchen where lemons and limes are hard to avoid? You can start by getting yourself a chopping board for you to work on when preparing your ingredients. It is definitely cheaper than replacing your marble. Always use coasters when serving drinks. This can prevent the mugs and glasses from leaving a moisture ring on your marble countertop or table top. If there are any spills, attend it quickly. I repeat, attend it quickly. Take extra note too when you have pets at home especially puppies and kittens when they are not potty trained. Their urine is acidic and would be the last thing you would want on your marble.

Marble can be normally cleaned with just a cloth and water or mild soap if it is a little greasy. But when all these prevention fails, just take a deep breath. We have got some ways for you to take care of those stains and etches if they are not too serious. Try mixing half cup of hydrogen peroxide to one gallon of water and spread the solution across the affected area before wiping it off. Hydrogen peroxide is recommended only on lighter marble stones because they tend to lighten the stones. For darker surfaces, use acetone. If the stains persist, create a poultice by mixing water and baking soda to the consistency of peanut butter. Leave it for 24 hours and then gently wipe it off with a clean cloth. If the stain is still there, it is best to contact a professional to take care of it.

Keep Calm

So again, use a chopping board when preparing the ingredients for your meals, this time to prevent sharp objects from scratching the surface. Sweep the floor often too to get rid of dusts or sharp particles which might scratch the marble flooring when you drag your feet across the floor. If the damage is done, do consider contacting the professionals if they are very damaged. But minor ones, you may try the following. For teeny weeny scratches, it can usually be removed by just using a cloth and some deep cleaning. For more serious ones, use a very fine sandpaper or a steel wool to buff the surface. Please consult a professional so that you do not use the wrong sandpaper. After that, rinse it with water, dry it and seal it with a marble polish.
