Marble Restoration Services Singapore
Natural stones like marble can last a long time if being cared for properly. But overtime, scratches and etches and still inevitable especially in places like hotels and lifts where the traffic is almost nonstop. What can be done to maintain the surface would be to do sealing from time to time and polishing few months once. There are 2 main types of marble finishes which requires different kind of restoration when things go down the hill.

Polished Finish
Polished marble finish gives you the very glossy look which reflects the marble details in all its glory. You can clearly see the veins and they are usually installed at places to make it look grand and eye catching. They are usually found in hotel lobbies, lifts and of course households, countertops, table tops and anywhere else which needs to impress. The layer of sealant and gloss which gives them the shine makes them more stain resistant but does not protect them too much from scratches and etches. It is important to reseal marble surfaces regularly to prevent too much of a damage.
To restore marble and achieve the polished look, the floor is first wiped clean and striped off its first layer to smoothen out any scratches and visible stains. To make the marble shine again, the process is similar to sanding a wood to smoothen its surface, using different abrasive diamond grits, each leaving the scratches thinner than the previous one until it is almost microscopic. Now that we have a smooth surface, we would need to polish it to really make it shine and glossy. There are several methods out there such as coatings, crystallization and powder polishing.

Honed Finish
Marble with honed finish generally gives a more muted feel to the space. They work better at spaces with high traffic because it is more scratch resistance and less slippery when it is wet, very suitable for bathroom floors. Without the gloss which adds extra protection to the marble, honed marble surfaces are usually more porous, making it more prone to stains, hence requires more resealing in the long run. Even though it is scratch resistance, when not protected by a finish coat, it is still susceptible to them and over time, dirt and dust will gather in all these scratches and cause the scratch to expand, inducing more damage.
To restore the honed marbles, first clean the surface with a marble approved cleaner and a wet cloth, then allow it to dry. Then use different grades of sandpaper to smoothen out the scratch starting from the lesser grade which has a rougher surface. Finish everything up with a stone sealant. The process is pretty much the same as to restore a polished marble but it stops right before the
polishing process.
Leave It To The Experts
Normal marble cleaning can be done easily by yourself if the surface area is not too big, but when it comes to restoration and polishing, it best to leave it to the professionals because marble installation itself is very costly and you would not want to ruin it further.
