Marble, when being incorporated into homes are usually coated with a layer of sealant to protect it from scratches, so what you need to do, is to make sure that coating last as long as possible.

Wiping

Marble does not deal well with lemons, nor with any acid in this case. So when life gives you lemon, just make sure it stays away from the marble. Because it is composed of calcium carbonate, acid can easily corrode the marble which might not be what you want. Hence, all you need is to train up your reflex and wipe off or blot any stains quickly before it dulls the surface. Though it is nice to work straight on the surface, it is highly recommended, for your bank account’s sake to use a chopping board. Be mindful of the detergent you use to clean marble surfaces, be it the countertops, table tops and floors. Opt for more neutral PHs detergents.

Heat

Your marble is durable, but it is not indestructible. Think twice before you place that hot pot of soup right on your marble top. Even though marble is heat resistant, it is still better to put a heat absorbent pad underneath. For smaller mugs and bowls, use coasters. It protects and gives you a reason to show off your collection of coasters from overseas.

Seal

Marble in its most natural form is very porous, it is very hard and durable but it is still porous. Therefore, whether you have a polished marble surface or honed surface, that layer of protection is very much needed. Always look out for scratches or when you see water start seeping into the surface. Regular marble resealing is more needed in places like offices as  compared to homes because first, the marbles have to endure high traffic, second, people are going to walk on it with shoes from the outside bringing in stones and dirt which will scratch the floor.
